Bait Introduction

There are a whole host of baits to choose from and you can either buy bait or you can collect it yourself. Obviously the buying it option is the easy one and you will have a very large selection to choose from. Generally bait comes into three categories.

    Live Bait

    • Availability will depend on the season and the locality. Lugworm is probably the most popular bait and most easily available to buy or dig yourself. The following is a general list : - Lugworm (blow and black), Ragworm - you may see harbour (often called mud rag) white and king, Crab - soft and peeler, Sandeel, Razorfish, Clam, Cockle, Mussel

    Artificial Bait

    • A wide selection is available from jelly eels, to mackerel feathers, small imitation fish, crab, worms, spinners and lures. You name it and someone’s made it!

    Frozen Bait

    • Most live bait can be frozen but its best done when its very fresh. Preparation is different for almost every different bait and we now have companies that specialize in this area (squid, mackerel and sandeel are the most popular). A great backup to live bait and something you can keep in the freezer at home (if you’re allowed :-))

Bait can be collected all around the Gower coastline but it involves some hard work and a little planning.
