Beginner’s Guide

So where do you start? There are a couple of options open to you.

You could pick up a book or magazine as there are plenty available or you could join a club but personally if you’ve never been fishing before the best thing to do is try and go with someone you know first, this way you can try it out without spending money on kit that you may never use again. Hook

They can show you where to find your local tackle shop, which is probably your next best choice. A very valuable source of information, you can find out where would be a good place to fish, what tackle and bait to use and not forgetting the times of the tides. It doesn’t need to cost a lot for your first rod, reel and some tackle and some shops will even hire them out!!

Most good tackle shops can seem a bit daunting for the novice as you will usually see the locals standing around having a chat, but don’t let that put you off. Fishermen are a friendly bunch and will almost always be happy to help you out and point you in the right direction, but don’t expect them to give up their best marks as these are often closely guarded secrets!
